Does the idea of being able to take more holidays appeal to you? An excellent way to be able to take more holidays is by owning a static caravan. This will enable you to take breaks at much shorter notice, and much cheaper than is generally expected.
Bear in mind though, if you are genuinely considering investing in a static caravan, then you should consider a number of issues before handing over your money. Not least the question of insurance for a static caravan.
As opposed to touring caravans, static caravans can be prone to several risks of geography at the site where it is sited. The risk of such unforseen occurrences as flooding, storms and falling trees are often ignored by lots of potential owners,
irrespective of how commonly they occur. Also there is the possibility that during the winter pipes can freeze up and burst, which is a major headache to static caravan owners.
Once you have identified a site that interests you, it is very important that you check with the owners whether the park has ever been subject to flood or storm damage. If you discover that it has then this could stop you finding affordably priced insurance for the static caravan on the park.
Even if the site owners say flooding is not an issue you should also do a further check to identify whether the site is located in an location that is at risk of flooding. To find this out you need to know the post code of the site. If the site is situated in England or Wales, then you want to go to the Environment Agency flood information page on their website and put in the postal code into the field on the right-hand-side of the page. If the park is in Scotland then you want to go to the Scottish Environment Protection Agency website.
It would then be a good idea to look on google maps to locate the site and specific caravans more precisely before referring back to the flood map for a better indicator to the flooding risk that exists. Places that in particular can be difficult to get insurance because of flood risk are Lincolnshire and Norfolk, sites close to major rivers such as the Severn and Avon rivers, and low-lying coastal areas around North Wales.
It is a fact that nearly all holiday home/static caravan sales are of already sited caravans. The transaction will be made either by the site owner themselves, or the owner in the case of a second-hand caravan (with the permission of the site owner).
Sometimes it is possible to buy a site that doesn't have a caravan already sited on it and make an arrangement with the site owner to have it sited there. If such arrangements are made they will expect a significant payment for allowing the siting of a caravan because they would have expected to make a profit on the sale of a sited caravan.
As a result you will pay a good deal more for a caravan that is sited than an unsited caravan. But you should bear in mind that the need to check that your insurance policy protects you against financial loss in the event that the caravan becomes unusable. Should you fail to do this then you could be setting yourself up for an unpleasant double hit: the financial loss while the caravan is being fixed: plus the excess costs of any repairs.
It is very advisable to also make sure you take out liability insurance if you rent your caravan to people. In the unfortunate event that somebody is hurt as a result of something that is found to be your fault, then you could have the misfortune of finding yourself many thousands of pounds out of pocket. Liability cover will make sure that any medical and court costs you may incur as the result of such a scenario will not have to come from your pocket.
You are very wise to get yourself informed if you are thinking of investing in a static caravan, and also make very sure that you have adequate insurance cover. Obviously it is advisable to shop around for your static caravan insurance, as this may well save you a good deal of cash. There are a number of very good caravan insurance providers on the market, ready to provide you with just the policy you need.
